Frequently Asked Questions

Which class is best for my child?

There is a class group in which YOUR child will thrive, and we will work together to determine which group that is.  The age ranges help us narrow the choices based on the different programs from infants to those who are ready for more advanced musical training.  AND... Our conversations will help us find the right fit based on your child’s personality, your goals for your child, and your family’s schedule.   The curriculum is designed to meet the specific needs of each age group, and I further tailor the activities to best fit the makeup of each individual class.

What if my child is not engaged and participating?

There are SURE to be times when this is the case, especially at first.  Your child's true job on the first day of class is to learn about this specific place and these people, and their little brain is trying to find patterns to make sure this is a safe place they CAN relax and become engaged.  Your child may just want to sit on your lap and watch, and this is an excellent way to learn.  NOTICE what your child is watching, and talk quietly with them about what you are now watching together.  Your respect for their need to watch and understand will help them become comfortable enough to get fully engaged when they are ready.  Your child may need to explore every single surface of the room... That is their JOB.  Walk around with them and talk about the things that draw their attention.  Occasionally when a new activity starts, swoop them up and bring them back to the circle and draw upon the enthusiasm of the children who are engaged.  It is important for each child to process the environment fully, before being ready to process the music and activities.  AND... each child may participate and be engaged in their OWN WAY, which may be different than anyone else... but they are still engaged.  In Kindermusik, we follow the child, find their interests, and expand upon them.

Can someone other than a parent attend with the child?

Yes.  We have mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, relatives, nannies who regularly attend with a child.  Typically the same person attends each time to ensure consistency for the child, but there are some families who alternate who gets to attend with the child as their schedule permits, and other times when both parents attend.   Parents who work often have a special partner attend with their child during the week, but also make sure to schedule time to attend a Saturday Kindermusik Playdate so they get a chance to see their child blossom in the music as well.  For the remainder of these questions, the word "parent" refers to all of the adults who attend and who are active with the child during the week.

What is my role as a parent in this musical process?

In classes where parents attend and participate WITH the child, the parent is like the coolest personal coach... actively listening and helping the child be aware of the activity at hand, while noticing HOW the CHILD WANTS to be engaged, supporting their unique style, and encouraging them to expand just a little beyond what they know.   This will look different for each child.  Although it is tempting sometimes to really connect and engage in conversations with other adults (which is so needed), it is important to make a quick plan for a better time to talk, and really connect with your child in class.

Outside of the classroom, even with children who participate independently, the Kindermusik recordings, books, instruments, and more are the tools parents can use to gain that beneficial level of repetition and familiarity, expanding on these ideas and activities throughout the week, at home, in the car, and even out and about.  That's where the true learning for the child takes place.  We firmly believe the parents are the child's first and primary teacher.  Our class times are simply a launching point for new activities, and the opportunity to synthesize all they are learning when we joyfully get back to making music with our friends.

Overall, Parent involvement in the musical life of a child is critical... from birth throughout their musical path, even beyond Kindermusik.   Everyday interactions with your child that include music are part of the process that helps them gain music concepts and abilities, as well as allowing the music to enhance every aspect of the child's development.  Parents are essentially learning the basics of music and music therapy, and how to weave music into the routines of the day to help your child, and effectually making parenting a little easier.  The curriculum is designed to present so many different elements of music, physical skills, cognitive skills, language, and even social and emotional skills.  Regular emails about the class content, and our conversations in our MusiconnxMe Facebook group provide guidance and discussion for making it REAL at home.

Can I just enroll class by class, or choose specific months?

As you may be starting to see, this isn't JUST a fun thing to do for a day, or for a few days, to start and stop randomly.  YOUR child will benefit most from this experience through the consistency of the process of learning to make music, both in and out of class, and through familiar repetitions, as well as regular new material to add layers to the foundation of learning that is being created.  Once enrolled, we make it as easy as possible to continue through each of the units as we progress throughout the school year.  If you ever feel your child is NOT thriving and benefiting from this experience, please contact Ms. Debbie to discuss what we can do differently to help you and your child find get into your groove.   If life circumstances require a change in plans, please contact Ms. Debbie to discuss your situation and how to discontinue your enrollment.

Why doesn't Kindermusik cost less?

Consider this:

1. You and your child will be immersed in a total quality program.  Kindermusik International is a world leader in Early Childhood Music and Movement programs.  There are thousands of trained and licensed educators in over 70 countries, who continually participate in ongoing training.   Being a part of   “KINDERMUSIK” ensures that you get an exceptional product and an exceptional experience.  The materials produced by Kindermusik International are of the highest quality.  With your Home Materials, your classroom experience can continue at home every day of the week!  If you move, you can get connected with a different Kindermusik program to continue.

2.   You and your child are getting the benefits of a dual edged education focused on the whole child... from infancy on.  Kindermusik regularly consults with experts in the field of early Childhood development,  as well as those in Early Music Education as they develop their curricula.  These experts, along with an amazing team at Kindermusik International, bring their knowledge and experience into your lives.  No other curriculum can boast of such backing.

4.    You will recognize and draw from the level of education and experience of the educator.  Debbie Mondale has a BS in Music Therapy and Psychology, and has been dedicated to sharing the magic process of music with families through Kindermusik since 1998.   Your child will KNOW they are noticed, appreciated, respected, and LOVED by Ms. Debbie.  This gives them the opportunity to bond with and learn from another adult, building these important social skills in their life.

5.    If you compare apples to apples, Kindermusik is often less expensive than other programs.  The total cost of the tuition and home materials is included and divided into easy monthly payments.  There are no hidden fees, such as costume fees, recital fees, testing fees, instrument rentals, or additional purchases required.  With Kindermusik “you get what you pay for” – and then some!

Kindermusik is truly MORE than just music.  Carla Hannaford, educator, biologist, and author of Smart Moves put it this way:

“Kindermusik is elegant in its integrated approach to a child’s development…The importance of having families working together, where everyone benefits from the sense of belonging, gets directly at the heart of what we, as a society, are needing at this time to raise healthy, loving children…All of this is provided in the Kindermusik program.”
